I am applying to jobs that pay lower than I would like, but not necessarily with the hope that I'll be able to convince them to pay more. I have already been unemployed for a few months so at this point I am willing to take any amount of pay and will keep looking for higher paying jobs in my free time. I'm not sure I would be pushing my luck in the current economy by trying to get a potential job offer outside of the salary range they advertised.

Appreciate you sharing this. I’m also casting a wide net and staying open to conversations, even if the posted range isn’t ideal. Sometimes the best opportunities come from unexpected places, and I’d rather be in the room than miss out entirely
Do you mean that you are applying for jobs that you are willing to accept comp at the high end of the pay band or jobs for which desired comp exceeds the pay band entirely?
I have experienced that smaller companies can be more flexible on pay than larger companies that can be more rigid to keep comp within pay band based on YOE and other factors.

Great question. I’m exploring both, roles where I can negotiate toward the top of the band, and others where the posted range might not reflect the full potential. I’ve found that some companies are open to adjusting comp for the right fit, especially when I think I’ll be good.
If the lower salary range is completely off the table for me, I wouldn’t bother with it. Definitely can ask for more if you do your research, keep it reasonable, and make your case for it.

Totally valid approach. For me, I’m thinking it’s more about flexibility. It could be potential opening to use in my ability to negotiate and grow once I’m in the right environment.
Is the pay just lower than you expect?
Lower than you make now?
Lower than you need it to be?
Those are different, imo.

Good point. For me, it’s more about ‘lower than expected’. I’m financially stable, so I’m prioritizing growth, alignment, and long-term potential over short-term comp. But I’m still mindful of what’s sustainable.

I haven’t personally because it seems like a time suck or waste of time. But maybe if I had more faith in my negotiating skills it could be a good idea!

Same here I think
I’ve long since given up on targeting salary. I just want a full-time position. At some point, you realize that you’re never gonna have the six-figure job and aim for something more subsistence-level.
There just aren’t enough “good” jobs to go around anymore. What isn’t being destroyed by AI is getting sent overseas. Career positions are booming in countries like India, Mexico, Nigeria, Vietnam, and The Philippines because they’re cheap and those countries have little to no labor regulation. So companies can get away with paying an Indian or a Nigerian $5 a day to do a job that an American would normally do for $100K a year.
Don’t believe me? Just go on LinkedIn. Every networking group has seen an explosion of new members from the countries I mentioned earlier. It’s not a coincidence. And anytime an American joins the group, they instantly get bombarded with connection requests because those foreign nationals are all looking for US citizenship and want as many American connections as possible because they think one of them will put in a recommendation for sponsorship.
And speaking of Americans being targets, what also isn’t a coincidence is the increase in the number of scam artists exclusively targeting Americans because of the anemic job market here. It’s a total mess.

Thanks for your advice here. It does seem like a far reach to get really good roles right now.
