I’m working with a financial education startup that is looking for an animator or team of animators that can produce 10-20 2Danimated explainer-videos (possibly a lot more in the future). 60-90seconds in length each.
They want to prioritize comprehension (function>fashion), with just a bit more style than what you can see of their past videos on their front page: https://learnfinlit.com/

Humanize the conversation. I do it every time. I try and get personal with the person so that they feel they’re talking to a real human and maybe want to give me a good offer bc I’ve been kind and inquisitive. I’ve gone as far as saying I’m not a good negotiator and have shortchanged myself in the past. So I would like to take this slowly and get it right. I was met with admiration and a great offer. And we just had a lovely chat about how to be better at these convos in the future.
Make sure you are foremost prepared with market data. Come prepared to give a salary range AND an exact number you want (that you have devised as the market band for the role.) Hopefully your number or range is close to theirs. If it isn’t, and they’re offering lower, ask how they reached that number. Things you can say are “From my market research, other competitors are paying X for this role and it’s responsibilities.” Don’t ever agree if you arent happy with it. Also feel totally free to say “This is great! Thank you so much for your time. And again I’m really excited about this opportunity. Right now, I’d like to take some time to look everything over, and I’ll get back to you as soon as I can.” This gives you time. To assess. You can come back and say “After I fully understood the roles and responsibilities of the position and researched the average salary for this position, I feel X is a more reasonable number to start with.” It can be tough to say these things. But you need to. Taking a low offer means leaving tens of thousands of dollars on the table in your future. Any raise you get from them is based off of this first number. Do NOT short yourself. If they won’t budge on the base salary, try for more pto, a signing bonus, performance bonus, stock options, a 3 or 6 month salary review.
Overall it comes down to remaining calm. Knowing that they 100% have wiggle room from their first offer. And having a lowest number in mind that you would accept. Know what you want. Know what’s the lowest. And go for more than you think you’re worth. Bc who knows maybe they’ll say yes! And if they don’t, they will bring you back to earth if need be. I recently overshot just to see what they’d say. And they balked at first but I did get the crazy number I asked for with some light pressure and good arguments. Best of luck!
Thank you so much for these tips as I have never negotiated before!
