How many vacation days do you usually take in a year? I try to take time off when I can, but honestly, catching up afterward can feel like it cancels out the whole break. Honestly sometimes it feels like I need a vacation after a vacation! Does anyone else find that it takes a couple of days just to get back into the swing of things after being away for a week or two? I’d love to hear how others handle the return to work chaos.

I take all of my PTO days (26 this year). A little over two weeks goes for actual leave-my-state vacations. The rest I use for staycations, sick days, and mental health days. I know exactly what you mean though, it's so hard to reacclimate to work after you've been on vacation. I've started to take the Monday of my first week back off as well to make the transition a little easier. Coming back to a 4 day work week is much less intimidating than 5.

That’s such a smart idea! Going from full relaxation to a packed inbox is always a shock. I might have to try the 4-day reentry strategy next time!

So jealous of A1s vacation schedule! That sounds like a dream come true! I rarely take full blown vacations. Usually I'm using my PTO for sick days or doctors appointments. I can't even imagine returning to work after more than a week off. Returning after just one day off is a struggle as it is.

Totally feel you! I use all my PTO, but only about two weeks go to real vacations, usually out of state. The rest gets eaten up by staycations, sick days, or mental health breaks.

I take every vacation day they give me now. Used to not be that way, for a lot of what you said. Feeling like I have to work twice as hard for a week after taking a week off seemed like it barely evened out. But I earned those days off. Also eased myself into coming back. The work isn’t going anywhere, and as soon as I’m done with it, more work.

Same here. I take every vacation day now too. I used to hesitate for the same reasons, especially that overwhelming catch-up feeling. But you’re right, those days are earned, and the work really will still be there regardless.

I only get 15 days per year, and I usually take every one of them. I live far from family, so most of it is spent visiting them

Totally get that, 15 days goes fast, especially when travel to see family eats up most of it. It’s great you still manage to use them all though. Being with loved ones can be just as recharging as a beach vacation (sometimes more so!).

Every single one of them and sick days. Zero remorse. As scary as it sounds, you need to *actually* put your OOO, delegate EVERYTHING to your junior/CSA while you’re gone, and just let your clients know in advance. The sooner you realize that your work won’t catch on fire when you leave, the sooner you’re free. You have to teach people how to treat you and respect your time off. You just have to enforce it.

Absolutely agree. I’ve learned that setting clear boundaries and fully stepping away is the only way to truly recharge. It can be hard at first, but once you see that the world keeps turning without you, it gets easier. People won’t respect your time off unless you do first.

I’ve been practicing in both big law (many yrs ago) and now in-house for over 10 years. Quite often I struggle because I don’t find work fulfilling. I’ve been in industries that allegedly have greater cause (healthcare) but was eventually disappointed by the corporate bureaucracy and went to a cutting-edge tech company for intellectual stimulation. Still I struggle. Should I try public interest? Not that I don’t need the money but it’s hard to work when I am so detached and find it meaningless

Any advice is appreciated. Thanks

Let’s look at this from a strictly career perspective. My goal is to come back to consulting.
