How much do you bill per month as an associate in patent prosecution? I struggle when I get over 170.

I rarely get close to 170. I am usually around 150 or even less.

The only time I go higher than 150 is when I am writing an important application or doing a difficult opinion.

I wouldn’t sweat it. 170 is a ton of a hours per month doing pure patent prosecution.

It is difficult to ever hit over 180 in strictly Patent Prosecution. That's why you should try to do a bit of other things that can help. Trademarks, control as contract review, investigations, litigation, etc.

I do other things but when I get to 180 I am not as efficient and feel like I can't handle everything well. Not sure if that's normal or if I'm not cut out for this

I had a 170 month and it felt amazing until 2 weeks later when burnout set in. I'm STILL recovering.

I'm the only employee with a background in finance in a tech startup growing at a 300%+ per year. But it's actually my first finance-related experience (interned and now part-time as I'm in my senior year of undergrad) and don't know really how to have an impact as my knowledge is "limited" and have no technical mentorship.

Any advice/mentorship would be wonderful!

Would love to hear thoughts on best approach of you are a senior associate at V10 firm. Do you just become counsel until they tell you that partnership is not in the cards or do you try to hop to the first partnership (equity, or at least NEP with clear progression to equity if you bring in some business) opportunity at a say V50 firm. I’m not home grown at my current firm, but do have a small book currently.

I've lost all motivation in my job and have done maybe 40 hours of real work since the beginning of August. I've built up a good track record the past couple years, and am good at bullshitting so people have been giving me the benefit of the doubt, but know the party can't keep going forever.

Seems like hiring has slowed down but i feel we are in for another bout of great resignations due to companies calling it's employees back now and employees finding ways to continue WFH. The ones who get lucky continue WFH while not so lucky ones will start switching and startups and other mid level companies cashing in on the talent. Looks like it's the lull before the storm.

Is it a viable business opportunity for a mid level patent litigation associate to leave BigLaw and consult? Service could include pre-litigation diligence (e.g., pre-litigation infringement analysis) for funding companies and law firms, overflow work, consulting for patent prosecution firms that take on ipr or litigation work, litigation consulting for tech companies that don’t have in-house counsel. Cross posting this in the BigLaw bowl.

Although I know you don’t need to pass the patent bar to “technically” do patent litigation, would it be a dead end move to pursue patent litigation without a technical degree / admission to the patent bar? In other words, would most BL firms refuse to staff associates on patent litigation cases if they don’t have a technical degree?
