How much does a job hopper label hurt in accounting? I’ve switched jobs 3 times in 5 years, mostly for good reasons (layoffs, better pay, bad bosses), but now I feel like I’m being blacklisted. Is this a real thing, or just paranoia?

Yeah all the people saying they wouldnt hire a job hopper are honestly hilarious. People arent going to job hop forever. Make them feel wanted and theyll stop.
I job hopped 4 times in 5 years, making my way up from 50K salary to 200K now, and ive been at my current firm for 8 years.

It’s not that I wouldn’t hire a job hopper, I’d just really have to think of the reasons they’re moving around so frequently and think if it’s something I’m able to work with. If I know my firm doesn’t shell out the money they’re looking for I’m not going to waste their time. If they’re jumping from one “bad “boss to another so frequently I’d have to think there’s at least some reciprocal issues there and be hesitant.

Also to be fair, I don’t necessarily think 3 jobs in 5 years is job hopping.

I seldom hire job hoppers. They are bad for the work culture and waste valuable training resources. If you haven't kept a job for any length of time in the past, why should I believe you want to be a long-term player at my firm?

Tbh a company will move on from you just as fast, the whole loyalty concept has to work both ways and it doesn’t.

Would YOU hire someone that consistently leaves for something shinier or because they felt they had “bad bosses” multiple times? Sure, all your reasons are valid, but you have to think about your personal brand before you job hop consistently (not factoring in layoffs because those are uncontrollable)

They label you as not loyal and that's that.

It can hurt to move around a lot. You’ll eventually find people that worry you are at flight risk and don’t want to move forward with that in mind. However, I wouldn’t let that completely hold me back from moving to something better either. Just be mindful of why you are doing it and be ready to explain it in an interview.

It can hurt if you’re moving a lot, but if you are currently employed obviously it didn’t stop you from getting that job. No harm in applying to see how others would feel about it

Some people will look askance as your record, but it's also true that the reasons matter. If you've been laid off, that's not your fault. But the thing about bad bosses is that once you say that to anyone you're also putting suspicion on yourself. It just stands to reason that sometimes the problem isn't the boss, it's the worker. Anyway, as a general rule, it's better to stay at a job for a few years just to establish that you're a generally loyal worker. If you appear too quick to pack up and split it can work against you.

Actions have consequences. Three jobs in five years raises a red flag. My old grandmother (born in 1896) used to say people like that are "like piss ants on a hot rail," just jumping around. Perhaps the only way to assuage those concerns would be tell the hiring company that you are willing to sign a three-year commitment to get the job. Tell them you are not looking for your NEXT job, but for your LAST job. Then stick to your commitment. It is past time you settled down and found your place in the work world.

I always think I’m against job hopping but then see a comment like this. 3 years is a lot to lose in your early career
