This age group needs constant reminders, consistency, and follow through. They are just like a plant, depending on the direction they are growing, can tell so much about how rooted they are in the soil. Checking and writing in an agenda book daily should be a must. There are a lot causes and effects in the long term due to how the foundation is laid.
I like the Student Planner from Payne Publishing. It has lines for you to write daily assignments with due dates and check them off when complete. It also has a monthly calendar you can write on.
Both. A calendar to write the assignments and the binder to keeping them organized

I walk my students through creating a digital planner in Google docs at the beginning of each year. We then share it with their parents/guardians, case managers, etc. It never gets lost or forgot at home and anyone included in the doc can make updates as needed. Works out great!
Our school supplies all students with planners. I also post all assignments on googleclassroom everyday.
