I generally allow unlimited, but also require them to do certain other things in a day - play a game, go outside, help around the house, read a book. They all still have some extracurricular in the summer, so that gets them out of the house too. Also send them to my mom's 1-2 days a week while I work. Still working out the details for this summer. When they were younger, I made them do all the 'other things' before they were allowed on screens, but trying to be more flexible now - some of my tween's friends are most available for games in the AM, and when I'm working, sometimes its best that they can just keep themselves busy in the AM. It's a work in progress.
We do fairly unlimited but they have camp so only have after 3-4PM on weekdays so that limits it to like 4-5 possible hours. They also have to practice piano, read, and groom etc. so it’s more like 2-3, of which we make them go outside or tell them to turn off screens for dinner and just to play. Weekends can be bad for screen time, but if we take them out or give them an alternative like sports, it limits them. TLDR; it’s unlimited but we try to fill with better options than screens to minimize screen time organically.
One of the community colleges nearby has kids classes all summer- everything from academics to coding to cooking to science to chess. There was a catalogue of classes. Some classes went through the summer, some were for 4-6 weeks.
My kids had to sign up for a class or more. We didn’t care what class they picked.
The kids balked but would see their friends there so..
I don’t know why more community colleges don’t do this
