Rare occasion for me to cover a shift. I’m already at work a lot, so showing up one more time is a big thing to ask.
I've done it now and then, for people who are friendly with me and who may have some serious reason to take the time off. I tend to avoid doing it just because it sets a bad precedent. If you become known as someone willing to cover shifts things can get out of hand.

I’ve picked up a lot of my coworker’s shift before. My company has a high turnover rate of employees and they always need me to cover their shift. I mostly cover part time associates shift.
If it doesn’t negatively impact my personal schedule, I will usually take over a shift or help someone find coverage when needed.
