I accepted a job with amazing comp. $165k base, strong bonus, great benefits, but I’ve had three panic attacks since I started. The culture is nonstop urgency, the team’s cutthroat, and I haven’t slept through the night in weeks. I used to think just get the bag was the goal, but I’m starting to wonder what I’m actually trading away. No amount of money feels worth feeling sick every Sunday. How do you know when the cost is too high?

I can definitely relate to this. I always thought that more money would equal less stress, but anyone who thinks that has not worked in finance. I started going to therapy to work through my anxiety. It actually helped a lot. Some people don't take therapy seriously but actually being able to practice different thought processes to handle the stress has been really helpful.

As I’ve gotten older, I’ve noticed myself caring more and more about work life balance. I think it comes down to what your priorities are and what trade off you’re willing to accept

yeah its not worth it. a lot of finance professionals come to this crossroad at one point in their career. its more important to build a balanced, healthy life for lower pay bc it leads to better happiness and longevity

This will affect your health in the long run. For me, I prefer a more work life balance rather than a higher income but with higher stress.

Next week I’m having my first lateral interview as a junior associate. I’m very nervous because the group with whom I’m interviewing works with life science/tech clients and the attorneys have strong science/tech backgrounds; and I do not. However, I am very, very interested in transitioning to this practice. And I reaaally want this job because it’s at my dream firm. How would you recommend preparing for the lateral interview?

I've an offer letter of 20.5 LPA from TCS, is it worth to go for TCS or should wait for other interviews?

Your suggestion will be much appreciated.

I was recently offered a Zoom interview. The school had 10 interview slots for me to choose from. Three were one day this week and the rest are next week. I chose the first time slot available. Should I have waited until one of the last slots so I was fresher on their mind when choosing a candidate? I am just sitting here stressing out until I here something. Also, do interviewers still appreciate a hand written thank you for the interview?

I have a business idea in the VR/AR space utilizing AI. However, I lack skill sets to evaluate viability or to create an MVP. Neither do I have a network to tap into.

My plan is taking classes to deepen my knowledge while joining and actively participating in communities to find collaborators.

Does this approach make sense or do you recommend other approaches? If it makes sense, do you have any recommendations for classes or communities?

Look forward to hearing your experiences and wisdom!

Additional Posts in Salaries in Finance

I am a registered sales assistant which means I have my series 7. I also have the 63 and my Life & Health license. I was a financial advisor but the role is commission only so I decided to take a role as an assistant for some time to learn etc. I really like my role, but I only make 32k a year and after taxes I only take home about 25k. I have a gut feeling that I’m not being paid market value but it’s tough to find comparable salaries. Do you think $15.38/hr is a fair wage in this case?

Does anybody know what the typical salary range is and total comp for someone starting out as an internal or external wholesaler? If you are one of these, can you share about your experience in terms of whether you liked it or not, work life balance, travel, etc?

Curious what’s a fair salary in MA? Was just told that there is likely not going to be a chance for a raise during my upcoming performance review due to my salary already being “above average for the industry” based on my employer’s questionable research. I’ve been with the company 8.5 years & am the only one in my role, which they can’t operate without. I execute tasks from two investment advisors and two financial planners - they make the decisions of what should happen & I make it happen.
