I am a fifth year insurance coverage litigator, but I want to try my hand at commercial litigation. I think my experience with insurance contracts could translate well but I wasn’t sure whether commercial litigation firms view coverage counsel in the same I’ve heard about ID attorneys. Has anyone made a similar transition?

I made the switch after about 2 years of practicing law. I think I was hired because I knew how civil procedure worked and I was a personality fit for a small firm. Contract interpreting skills don’t mean anything really if that’s what you’re asking. Most of what goes down in Commerical and business litigation is because the parties didn’t have a contract.
Now that I have my own practice, it would be important to me that my new hire is someone who responsible af. I would want to know that you take your continuing legal education seriously. What are you doing to learn llc and corp statutes? What will do you when trying to figure out if the claim is barred by the economic loss rule? How will go from not knowing to knowing?

Many won’t understand that coverage attorneys litigate (based on my own personal experience). Emphasize your litigation experience, attention to detail, and experience with the interaction between contracts and regulations (insurance regs.).

I'm a third year plaintiff's employment law attorney and I'm looking to move to defense, preferably still in employment law. I received an offer from a midsize firm that primarily focuses on PI with little-to-no employment law practice, so I'll have a bit of a learning curve. Offer is $90k, billable hours of 2100. Is this reasonable? I'm dead-set on leaving my current job, and this would be a $20k pay increase - which makes me believe I'm leaning towards taking it for those reasons only.
