Hmmmm, I'm wondering if I should take off a other day. Today was horrible.
I am so sorry that you are going through this! Any word on whether the grade below is an improvement? You must be getting close to the end of the year, so hang in there! Maybe make a paper chain and you can tear off a link every day.
Another idea: lunch detentions, accompanied by music you like, and they don't, can be therapeutic. I usually choose opera. Along with physical chores. I pick one or two at a time, give them 2 detentions in a row, and if they help me, I cancel the 2nd one (might be made up work, they'll never know!). Gives us a chance to talk, if that can help. Sometimes it's pure revenge, which would be a bad look, but again, they'll never know. The crux of the unspoken revenge is, "you ruin my class. I ruin your lunch." I have even ended up forging relationships with kids this way, and they've become allies during class.

This might be a good idea. Of course, my 7th graders would be in my room with my 6th graders!!! That might be interesting.
I firmly believe middle school teaching is a calling. I’m just going to put this out there: I can’t stand middle school kids, my own kids when they were in middle school, and myself when I was in middle school. The middle school years are challenging socially and emotionally for the kids, let alone their teachers. You might consider trying another grade level to see if you like it better. Kudos to all you middle school teachers out there who love your jobs and bless your hearts.

I have seriously contemplated going to High School. I have a friends granddaughter at our school, and I was going to try to stay for her 7th and 8th grade years. But if the right offer comes, I may take the move.
Sorry you're going through this. This seems to be a pattern lately. It's because parents and students feel entitled and they can cry wolf and the districts give in. It's sad! Good luck and for sure take your days off.

I felt much more refreshed today, and actually had halfway decent classes .
Is there a referral option for defiance? I have found that consistent documentation of behavior is a very important factor in long term class management. Plus, it alerts admin, which you should not be "protecting" from their overwhelm - it's their job, and you need to document behavior so it isn't carried on and also so you're not labeled a pushover teacher who can be messed with.

And take those days fully. Act unemployed. Don't worry about what may be happening in your room or with the sub.

Thank you for the advice. I do try to shoulder the load to help others, but in the long run, I'm the one who suffers.
My heart truly goes out to you. I taught middle school for seven years. Those were the hardest seven years of my life.
Take your last personal day & do something nice for yourself….Trust me you’re not alone teaching has become,UTTERLY EXHAUSTING!!
Look for another school; it’s usually higher ups refusing to back teachers and enforce the rules and consequences. In our classes if we have that situation make phone calls to parents, document in triplicate and involve coaches. If they refuse to work failing grades will ensure but your documentation saves you. Hold after school tutorial opportunities and when no one shows up document that too. Middle school is trough because you’re dealing with an age group who doesn’t get it and if they’re all backing each other with ridiculous behaviors it’s a losing situation.
