I applied for an assistant manager role I really wanted. Didn’t get it. A week later they asked me to “cover shifts” anyway. More responsibility, same pay, bigger title talk.

Meanwhile my friend left her “fast paced” store because fast paced meant three people doing the job of six.

Ever notice how rejection sometimes saves you? Or how a title can cost more than it pays?

I think they did you a favor. What's the point of a title if it doesn't mean more money? Especially because there's no standardization of titles across companies. It was probably a blessing in disguise, and sometimes rejection is the blessing.

Keep your hourly job, cover those shifts and get overtime. Blessing in disguise that you didn’t get the position, especially if it’s more work and no extra pay.

That is the classic more responsibility, same pay trap. Covering shifts without the title is fine occasionally, but when it becomes expected, that is just free labor wrapped in opportunity language. Sometimes not getting the title forces you to see what the role really looks like from the outside.

Absolutely, sometimes a rejection is a blessing in disguise. Taking on more responsibility without real support or pay can burn you out fast. Titles don’t always match the reality of the work, and avoiding that trap can save a lot of stress down the line.

Titles mean nothing if you don't get more experience and pay

So, this is a little awkward, but I recently moved to SD for a fresh start, and honestly, I love this city. My problem is I have been more of a homebody since I moved here and I'm a little intimidated to go out and meet people because I don't feel like I fit in here. I am overweight and this city is full of active, and attractive people. I guess I am wondering what my experience would be if I got out more? I feel like people look at me when I'm in public because I stand out due to my size.
