I commute with my husband daily since we work closeby. He makes me an hour later daily (mind you we wake up at the same time and I manage to blow out my hair and pack us breakfast lunch in that time). We’re a one car family. Nothings getting through. I’m exasperated

If he hasn't changed after youve asked him, it's time for some firm boundaries and consequences. Tell him "I need to be at work by [time] and so we need to leave at [time]. If you aren't ready, I'll be taking the car and you'll need to find another way to get to work." Then do it. If it doesn't matter what time you get to work, just work from home until he's ready, but the person who has to be in earliest should be setting the time you leave.

I came here to say this same thing. He can take an Uber.

Why are we giving the husband a pass? He’s an adult, and as a person above said, the person with the earlier schedule dictates when you leave. He’s being consistently inconsiderate of OP’s schedule, and just saying “work on stuff while you wait” is further enabling him to drag his feet.

I’m not sure why they have to leave together at all. They’re both grown-ups with jobs. He can leave when he wants. I don’t think she should have to rush him out the door in the morning. But agree she absolutely shouldn’t be “waiting” for him, unless she wants to.

As I noted above, though, if I really wanted to ride with my husband, for whatever reason, I would just sit on my laptop and work while he gets ready. There’s nothing about being in the office that changes my ability to get work done. Just bill an hour at home, then drive into the office whenever.

This sounds strange. Need more context. Is he just one of those people who cannot manage or stick to timing, but he’s trying? Is he not trying at all and brushing you off? How has he responded when you bring it up? Why don’t you just take the car and leave? Is it affecting your image at work or is it fine to show up the hour later??

My first thought was ADHD! Not giving him a pass, just suggesting that OP’s husband may need to find a creative solution!

like

Tell him you’re leaving at X time and if he’s not ready he can get an Uber. Or is there anyone he works with who lives nearby who he could carpool with?

like

Does he wear a watch? As someone with ADHD, I have extreme time blindness if I'm not wearing a watch...5 minutes or 3hrs could pass and I'd have no idea.

Can you just sit in the car and work on your laptop while you wait for him?

like

Plus I sit for half an hour plus every morning waiting for him to get ready. On top of everything we’re childless!

like

Is it possible to get a second car? I assume public transport or uber aren’t an option? Are you willing to leave without him and make him suffer the consequences of his lateness?

like

I can very much relate to this. You need another car.

Some folks aren’t morning people. Ask him to prep some lunches each week for you all the evening before.then one additional household task before he goes to sleep. This is how my husband and I operate, as I am useless in evenings but great in the AM.

My husband is similar. I recently realized that he does a lot of networking on his phone when in the bathroom getting ready. Also he is often listening to podcasts when getting ready. Told him to stop and keep on time. We are not ready to get another car right now.

Can you get an ebike and use that to commute?

Ew why should she e-bike to work? Don’t have her sell herself short because the dude can’t manage his time.

Tell him you have a male co worker offering you to drive you to work. That should do the trick. Or one day just go to work without him. He will throw a shit fit and have to uber to work but the message will get through.
