A few things for lazy students to consider:
1. We already mentioned that without decent grades, they're not getting to play college sports.
2. Sports require a work ethic. You don't get a work ethic by sitting back and not doing any work.
3. If they are rich, they'll definitely have to know their math. Otherwise, how will they know their manager, accountant, etc., aren't embezzling all their money?
4. If they're signing a contract, they will need good reading skills. People who can't be bothered to read get taken advantage of, every single time.
That should give them something to think about.

Looks like you teach Elementary school…at that age, kids wanna be superheroes, not just pro athletes! I teach CTE (career technical education, or voc tech) to HS students. My students are motivated to work in a career field, they learn about how industry functions and how to do adult work, along with professional industry credentials. All of my graduating seniors are going to college, and all are choosing STEM career paths.
My students are athletes, too, but they’re realistic about their pro prospects.

Phew, glad to hear its not older students as well. The elementary kids are so fun, I love hearing about all their big dreams. Only sometimes do I try and bring them back down to earth and focus 😂 you are lucky, it sounds like you have wonderful students!
I am with you. While I teach high school not elementary when I was subbing 10 years ago my first job was at a middle school and the Spanish class. I was handing out the work and one young man said that he did not need school as he will be an NBA player. Every time I had him he would not do any work. Even for the teachers. I kind of wonder what happened to him.

That is sad to hear. Hopefully he wisened up and learned to enjoy studying... otherwise things could be rough for him.

First, is there a difference between college athletes and professional athletes any more?
I did some research once on NCAA eligibility standards. Since you are elementary, start pushing the kids to get good grades now and push academic success. I had too many conversations with juniors and seniors facing reality that while C’s and D’s get degrees, they don’t get you into college. And unless you have the talent of LeBron James, the direct route is not an option. A buddy of mine is a D2 football coach and often complains that there are so many kids he can’t take due to his school’s SAT/ACT requirements.

Okay, when I experienced this with middle/high school students. I planned some lessons showing them the downside of professional athletes, not to burst their dreams, instead to show them how they needed to focus on math, writing, reading, good health. I used real-life athletes who made the money and lost the money. Also, to show that they need a back-up in the event they don't make it to pro.

I actually love the idea of showing a few examples of busts just to keep things real. Not to necessarily burst dreams like you said but rather to reinforce good life principles. Thanks for sharing!
