I’ve put myself up for L4 promo this cycle. Assuming I get it, what would be the best next steps to optimize for long-term growth/TC?
My understanding is that L5->L6 is extremely painful at Google. It may be easier to leave for a handful of years and gain managerial experience before returning.
L4->L5 is less challenging; however, I’m under the impression I can do this quicker at another company (if I leave after being freshly promo’d) AND get higher TC.

That’s every recruiter everywhere, not a GOOG only thing
There’s a severe lack of understanding of Goodhart’s law throughout Google. I was in sales but I would not be surprised if recruiters are goaled the same way - on meetings, on interactions, on applications submitted, rather than on delivering a good customer (or in this case, applicant) experience. This is definitely a trend throughout the tech industry right now, but I found it to be particularly egregious at Google.
I wonder if it is, in part, due to the volume of applicants, prestige of Google, and competition with other major tech companies that promotes this behavior
