I went to interview with a company that bought out a family business. They kept the owner on for his knowledge. I interviewed with the VP, the Plant Manager, and the previous owner. He admitted he had no idea what to ask me or what this job entailed. But we had a nice conversation and I got the job.
That’s both hilarious and terrifying. At least honesty got you the job—but I’d be questioning what else that company had no idea about.
So often, we promote people who are exceptional at their individual contributor role and throw them into people management without providing the tools to effectively do so. I commend the manager for sharing that with you!
Completely agree. We promote technical experts, then wonder why morale drops. Leadership without training is just trial and error—with real people caught in the middle.
