I have a student who is so down on herself. If she messes up, she is in tears. If she can't get a line straight when she is cutting a piece of paper, she gets frantically. I want to say something to help her, but I am at a loss. What do you say to help your students who don't give themselves a break?

I tell them the truth: research shows that we learn more by making a mistake than be getting everything right. They've put people in MRI scanners and watched the way the neurons light up as ac way to measure this. If you never make a mistake, you're not growing!

I am fortunate enough that her family also attends the same place of worship with me. So we also have that connection. I am good friends with her Grandma, so she kind of keeps me updated on things so I know when she is having a tough time outside of school. I worry because she is now finished in my class with the end of the grading period, which means changes in her schedule.
