as another fish. have 13k left in car payments for another 40+ months, would you recommend doing a 10k onetime payment or investing that 10k instead. better to lower debt or keep paying monthly cost

What’s the APR? If it’s less than 2% I’d say it’s better to invest your money

like

If it’s less than 4% I would say invest, especially if you have more than 40k invested already

Strictly from a mathematical sense, if your APR is lower than market return, you should invest it. That said, if the loan is weighing on you psychologically, pay down the 10k, and then pay off the remaining 3k as fast as possible (and have the self control to not let your lifestyle creep when the loan is paid off)

like

thanks, Gang. consider the market returns YTD is around 18% and my APR stands at 4.04% so dunno if I trust the market to run any longer or just relieve a chunk off the vehicle debt right now

my s.o. and i have a total salary of 210k and we’re 28/25 respectively. her parents ordered a tesla y for 70k and paid off 45k so far. we live in chicago and they are in iowa so they figured it’ll be better use for us to have the car. we’ll pay off the current loan and pay them back the amount they paid throughout the next 8 years interest free. is this even a good deal for us or are we able to get too much car for our age?

Lot of fear in the market right now (understandably so). The situation in Ukraine is awful and the potential consequences are scary to think about.

There are some who want to sell in fear of their investments falling further. Do not do this. Hold and continue to buy more. Continue your 401k contributions, and add whatever you can afford after every paycheck into your brokerage. Those who sold the covid crash were often late buying back in.

This is the dip you're worried about.
