If I were you, I would accept the verbal offer but do not sign any contract. Then wait until Thursday and see the outcome your preferred company. You can always come out of a verbal offer. You need to put yourself first.
I followed this. Of course the other is not happy.
I was just in a similar situation, I was honest with both sides on timing (not preference), and both were willing to work with me for reasonable extensions.
I would be obsessing over how badly I would need a job. If you're employed now, and not particularly desperate, you can try to work something out where you get an extension on a decision. If you absolutely need to get a job, it might be prudent to accept the offer you have and be happy to know you've got a job.
Tell your preferred company. Honestly, we all know the situation with hiring right now. There are no guarantees, but if you're a top candidate, your preferred company will indicate that in their response. If not, or if you worry about the guarantee, take the alternate offer.
I would just let the company that you're not as excited about know that you need a couple of extra days to figure things out. Not giving them a no, but not giving them a yes. Buy yourself a couple of days.
