I have some students who destroy their erasers and crayons, and constantly play with something on or in their desks. (This is the start of the day they begin). I do brain breaks, and engage them too. When I'm giving a mini-lesson, they seem to have a hard time focusing.

I am thinking of a quiet fidget item. Any suggestions?

I have used small squares of felt in the past. I called them fidget felts. First I did a mini lesson on tools vs toys. I explained that fidget felts were a tool to help keep our hands busy while our minds focus on the lesson. I bought the pieces of felt at Dollar tree and cut them into small squares. I told the kids they could rub it between their fingers, twist them, or squeeze them, but not throw them. I used all the same color and all the same size and gave one to everyone. It was their choice to use it or not. If they destroyed it intentionally, they would not get another one. It worked out well. They were soft so they met a sensory need, quiet, inexpensive, and boring enough to not distract them from the lesson.

I like this idea so much. I may try to make some for my class.

I would say a kid anything that could make a lot of noise in class, but something as simple as a fidget cube or a stress ball might help!
