Yes… I approached the person and said “It came to my attention comments about me… For self improvement, could you mind speaking to me directly so that I am aware and can make adjustments?
That is such a respectful way to put it. I admire how you framed it as self-improvement instead of confrontation — it probably lowered the defensiveness right away.
Conversation Starter
If you are confident enough to address the gossip, go ahead, it can save a lot of tit tattle. But I am a person that can be a bit confrontational and says things honestly, some people do not like the confrontational approach which is understandable. I do hope it was all good talk though, and you have a colleague you can confide in😊
We have a respectful workplace policy and it touches on gossip as well. Partly, it depends on what it is and I'm also always considering protected concerted activity and whether it could be a potential situation for that. But, I've definitely had to address it head-on before and have approached the individual(s) to inform them of some things that I'd been informed of. I wanted to hear directly from them. It gave me an opportunity to clarify any confusion (and facts) while also reminding them of the policy and the fact that gossip can be toxic, etc. And ultimately encouraging them to address any questions or concerns directly instead of perpetuating incorrect information and gossip.
I like how you linked it back to policy but also gave space for people to clarify. That balance between accountability and listening is so important — otherwise it just feels like discipline, not dialogue.
