I joined a new school this past summer and I'm still having trouble breaking into the cliques that exist here. I feel like I'm back in my middle school days, sitting by myself at lunch and always feeling left out. How can I get these teachers to let me into their group?

From my experience the juice isn’t worth the squeeze. Go to work, do your job, and go home. Separate friends and work for maximum results. Middle school teachers behave similarly to middle school students. Be a loner and you won’t get pulled into nonsense.

Do your work, go home. That's how drama starts! You don't need to revisit your own school days, remember 'friends ' being all in your business, starting rumors, while smiling in your face? That's the same thing, except with grown folks. I don't associate with anyone else except my classrooom paraprofessionals and my next door teacher. Walking in the hallway going to the bathroom, there's teachers huddled talking about other teachers, not in a good way. It's ridiculous, stay out of that, I eat my lunch in my classroom, I don't come out till it's time to go home!

Happy Monday Friend. It's early on the East Coast, about 7am. My advice to you is to keep being yourself. You are amazing in your own very way. Stay open to conversations and invites that are maybe not what you'd typically be open to. On the reverse side, enjoy this solitude at work. Pour yourself into your non-work friends and family. I remember middle school and I hated those cliques, come to think of it, I hate them now too as a grown up. Ha, well I wish you all the best!!!

I’m a naturally reserved person, and I also immigrated from Asia, so I truly understand how you feel starting at a new school—it can be challenging at first. You’re definitely not alone in feeling this way. When I first started, it took time for me to feel comfortable too. What helped me was building connections little by little—like asking for help with students we had in common. Those small interactions gradually turned into friendships. I also tried to arrive a bit earlier to department meetings so I could casually chat with other teachers. If there are more experienced teachers in your department, they are often very kind and willing to support you. Once others see that you’re open and friendly, it becomes easier for more people to approach you as well. Take it one step at a time—you’re doing great, and it will get easier. 😊

You don't want friends at work. They can turn on you and your job might get caught up in the dramatic mess. Smile, be polite, listen to podcasts, and go find non teacher friends! I have 1 teacher I consider a friend at my school. That is just how I like it. I stay out of all the immature drama that way and keep myself focused on my kiddos.

Why do you need to be in their groups? You're not there to make 'friends '. Do your job, go home, Getting involved in groups comes with a lot of drama. If you need drama in your life, go for it. I eat my lunch in my classroom, AWAY from the drama.
