Thoughts on hiring a coach for prep? I've never done this before and I don't just want a random practice partner who may or may not know what they're doing.

In general, be forewarned coaches are expensive and there are a lot out there, frankly anyone who passes the interview goes around claiming to be a coach. Best way to select is to have a conversation and understand their experience and feel the “chemistry” or go with a personal recommendation, don’t go purely by price or online reviews (most platform coaches heavily game the review system).

A good coach along your prep can be helpful especially set you up well early on. The real value add is getting good, thoughtful and actionable feedback. I’d also say, coaches are probably the most valuable for an interview vs. the early on stuff like getting an interview, there it’s a bit less bang for your buck.

I’ll also throw in that if you get the job, the relative cost of a coach is meaningless compared to the value (at max maybe you’d spend 2K on a coach). So many people spend 200K on an education or an mba for these jobs, skimping the last 1-2K if you could use the help shouldn’t be the trade off. IMO.

Also, please take my response with a grain of salt since I am a coach myself so there is an inherent bias here.

There are tons of different options for prep coaches, lectures, and courses. I would just try and read a bunch of reviews from people who have actually used the service, and talk to prospective coaches before you hire them to vet the bad ones out. Maybe someone in the bowl has used someone they can reccomend?

If you think a coach is what you really need and you have extra to spend, then go for it. Do what you think is best for you.

I think a good coach is very much worth the money! A good coach can help you catch your weakness and give really good actionable advice on what to improve on based on actual evaluation criteria used by the firm. I was plateauing and hired a coach, and he helped pointed out things that other good casing partners were not able to catch before

Is a role as a QA at a growing tech company a dead end role? For me, jumping from consulting to a traditional QA role would provide a lot of great exposure to software development but I don’t want to get stuck within a skillset and I’d like to leverage that experience to get into Product. Anyone ever do it or witness it? Appreciate your opinions!
