It is part of my job 🤷♀️ Not my favorite part, but I am given the time to do these office manager-type tasks and a paycheck is a paycheck, so I do it. I would move to a bigger company with a dedicated HR department if I was bothered enough by it.
I’m an HR department of one, so I’ve been there. If it’s your boss asking you to do this: Is there anyone else who could take this on so that I can focus on more strategic business tasks? If it’s colleagues: That is a great idea and I approve and fully support whoever would like to do this.
Both responses have worked well for me. So much of this stuff falls on HR simply because we’re willing to do it. If employees really care about the party stuff, they’ll figure out how to do it. In my experience, they simply need to know that they have support/approval.
I think this happens to HR women all the time. You’ll notice men in HR never get asked to buy cupcakes. If you don’t have an office administrator or marketing department it always falls on HR.
