Temp is a great way to get experience that gets to your next ideal role. If you’re undervalued this can be a stepping stone to market value comp in the future. If you want a slight practice shift or specialty you’re not currently exposed to this can be an easier way to move for experience.
I always tell someone take on a temp role with the expectation that it doesn’t convert. Will you be happy with the type of work and comp for the duration of the contracted assignment and will it better position you for your next ideal role. Employer name recognition means a lot when you think about a temp position leveraging you to a next role.
I'm hesitant because both offers will be in the area I want to specialize in. I guess it really comes down to whether I'm okay with finding another job soon?
What do you like about the temp opportunity? What don’t you like about it (other than it may not turn full time)?
Are you currently employed? What is the reason to move/transition?
Is the area of law something you’re passionate about (want to specialize)? Even with the temporary position, will you be able to learn a ton and be competent (or even an expert) in that area of law?
I might be too naive but if the area of the law is niche or something you’re passionate about, having that on your resume should help you get the next position. You might just have the headache of searching for a job while you’re in that temp role.
