As somebody on the other side of this, please don't do this. It's a negotiation process for a reason, and the employer is likely lowballing you with the expectation that you can and should come back with a counteroffer.
I always respected someone that (respectfully) negotiated salary when I was in industry. This was a sign to me that they would negotiate with suppliers or vendors instead of just accepting costs. I would rather pay more for your salary if I thought you could help me control external costs.
How do you ever expect to make more money if you don’t go through salary negotiation? They will pay you the least they can to get you on board so don’t let them do it. If you are good and solid they will pay you what you want with in reason.
This is really awful if you work for a large company that caps raises by %. If you start off weak you’ll never catch back up.
