I keep hearing you should tweak your resume for every single application, but sometimes it feels like overkill. How much tailoring is actually worth it when you’re applying in volume, and where do you draw the line between smart customization and wasted time?

As much as you can do without putting a serious limit on the number of applications you can get out each day. Chat GPT and Claude are great for this. It shouldn't take you more than 15-20 minutes to overhaul your resume once you get your prompt nailed down.

I only update my resume once a month as I remember accomplishments outside of marketing and realize that it can be reframed to fit marketing roles. For example, I was an office manager and part of what I did was legal case management so I reframed the wording to make it more general and showcase project management skills which lends itself well to some marketing roles.

I did that for bigger companies or higher paying jobs. And did it quite often. Also I tailored the cover letters to be more specific and more informal for each company. I also reached out to the hiring manager in cases that I could. Did all of That lead me to a job. No. Do I feel good that at least I tried my best- yes.

At the very least, you should adjust your "title" that you keep at the top of your resume, and maybe ask Chat GPT to help you identify some keywords to add in/replace. That's the simplest way to do it I've found.

Tailor more for your top desired roles. The others, tailor lightly if you can, but don’t slow down applying.

I took a temporary job as an attorney advisor at the SBA this past fall b/c it offered a regular paycheck, and my solo practice was suffering b/c of the pandemic. I like the work. I like working from home. Anyone have any insight into the possibility of this temp job becoming permanent. Did the SBA hire you permanently when your temp position ended? How did that happen?
