I noticed a coworker of mine (who’s also a good friend) has been low-key flirting with a guy on our larger team. They’re not on the same project, but still part of the same group. The thing is I’m not just iffy because it’s a work thing, but also because I saw him making out with someone else from our team in a car after a recent happy hour. 😬Now I’m torn - should I say something to her, or just stay out of it? And what’s everyone’s take on office romances? Any success or horror stories?

Did I see anything? No I didn’t! I totally understand wanting to have your friends back and would actually be really torn to be in the same situation. I would hate to put myself in the middle of it. Technically if nothing official or serious is going on either, that seems a tiny bit better, maybe..

funny

That makes sense. I think that’s what’s making it so tricky! If it were something official, I’d probably feel more obligated to speak up. But since it’s more flirty and casual (at least for now), I keep second-guessing whether saying anything would be overstepping. I really just don’t want her to get hurt down the line.

The best approach in that situation is to just ignore it. All these people are adults and they have the right to make whatever mistakes they want to make. There's really no point in getting involved. Your friend will probably resent that you're involving yourself.

Yeah, that’s what I keep coming back to. She’s an adult and can make her own choices, even if I don’t agree with them. I just don’t want to feel like I stayed quiet if things go sideways. But you’re probably right that saying something might just backfire.

Ooooh personally I wouldn’t get involved. It’s up to others if they want to get involved with office romances and then signing up for the drama involved with it!
If it is going to affect your work I’d just keep quiet personally.

Yeah, I hear you - it’s definitely tempting to say something as a friend, but at the same time, I really don’t want to get pulled into the drama. If it’s not crossing into work issues, maybe staying out of it is the safer move.

Personally I would stay out of it. Those kinds of things can get sticky and I don't like to be involved in any work drama or gossip. I would just let it be and watch it unfold. I have stuck my nose in things before and really regretted it later.

Totally get that. I’ve learned the hard way too that even with good intentions, getting involved can backfire. Probably best to just keep some distance and let things play out on their own.

Oof, that’s a tough spot. If she’s a good friend and you think she’d want to know, I’d gently bring it up, more like “hey, just so you’re aware…” and let her take it from there. As for office romances, definitely seen both success and mess. Context matters a lot.

Thanks for the advice - totally agree that context is everything. She’s a good friend, but we’re also coworkers on the same project... which is exactly why I’ve been so torn about whether to say something or just stay out of it.
