That can be a personal thing. I find it rude to ask someone what they earn so I never would. Some people are open with it and happily say and that fine for them, but I think it’s one of them where it can be left unsaid.
I get that, but secrecy often protects systems that are already unfair. Transparency does not mean nosiness — it means accountability.
I consider what I make to be my own personal business, so I just don't talk about it. And I'm not all that interested in what other people are making. In most organizations the salaries are set on an individual basis, and that can factor in experience, specific skills, the prestige of one's education, and so on. So knowing everybody's salary may not provide any information that's remotely useful beyond fueling gossip and resentment.
True, context matters — but so does fairness. When people know how pay is decided, it builds trust. Without that, silence just keeps the imbalance hidden.
