Yes, learned it the hard way and a few years later practicing as a an attending. the phrase " salary is for loser" is so true. Don't get paid hourly. it should be per patient encounter or per procedures/ surgeries performed. The difference is astronomical. it takes some researching to set this up, need to talk to your accountant and of course your employer should be ok with this.. but this is the way.
I made a risky move to create more opportunity for advancement which ultimately improved salary growth. What you’re asking about is switching companies to get a better raise than any internal promotion would offer. As a longtime hiring leader, this is real and individuals significantly increase their pay by switching employers and negotiating their pay from the outside. Generally people have little to no opportunity to negotiate pay once hired.
