I sometimes wonder if we label every uncomfortable workplace as “toxic.” My manager is blunt, direct, and doesn’t sugarcoat feedback. It stings, but I’ve improved because of it. At what point does discomfort become dysfunction?

If I have anxiety, feel uncomfortable or dread going to work because of the people/work load then it’s a toxic workplace. Toxic is relative in my opinion. Wha makes me feel uncomfortable won’t necessarily make the next person uncomfortable

I think the relative nature of a “toxic environment” is what makes it so difficult! If there is an employer where every employee think it’s a toxic environment they probably won’t last long as an organization. But the ones that split the room are allowed to just carry on with the status quo and go under the radar.

Communication is everything. I get that receiving feedback is necessary but consider the way you speak to others and how you expect to be communicated with. Sure, there are people that are direct however a professional knows how to communicate with respect. There are so many instances where employees are truly in toxic environments and deal with it in an effort to stay employed because their livelihood is their lifeline. Let's not get to a point where we normalize or excuse toxic or unprofessional behavior.

I tend to think the term toxic is overused, but it's one of those things that's personal to people. I mean, some people have thicker skin and behavior that some of us would call toxic is merely disagreeable to them. You make a valid point, some managers can be blunt. I'd say criticism meant in good faith isn't toxic, it may be uncomfortable but it can be constructive.

I agree, however I do stand firm in delivering communication in a constructive way with respect at the forefront. Look up toxic managers and you'll get a whole list of what is not acceptable behavior.

Does your manager acknowledge improvement, or do they pretend you never changed? Do they care otherwise and support your growth and the goals they can help with? Do they act predictably, with the message and vision staying the same? Do they gossip about you or do they keep it in-house, so to speak? Do they hear what you say, or do they pretend you said something different? A person can be unpleasant but not toxic. Just some random indicators I look for

If the feedback is only directed at the work itself then it’s nothing personal but of course they shouldn’t threaten to take away your entitlements like leave or medical benefits cause it’s workers’ rights infringement.

“Toxic” isn’t the same as “challenging” or even the same as “pain in the ass”. “Toxic” is an environment that gradually weakens & undermines your personal confidence and self worth.

It can be due to several factors, but the core feeling is that you find yourself becoming “less” often despite an increasing amount of time and effort you expend.

With experience you should feel more capable, not less. When you start to feel trapped or diminished, you should move on.

I have just started my journey in Salesforce and I have started working on Salesforce Vlocity. Order management to be specific. I wanted to know what are the opportunities and what kind of job market is there in Salesforce/Vlocity.

Also is it good for learning to start off with Vlocity/Order Management right off cause it is a bit confusing for me.
