im in human resources and for the past 25 years, i completely log off when i go for vacations. it may be due to the nature of my work/bosses or the companies ive worked for previously but ive never suffered any backlash or felt guilty for doing so. of course i always make sure to clear my work to the best of my ability and do a proper handover to my boss before i go for long trips so as not to cause any inconvenience to my team. also, compared to a lot of other countries, we already have a lot less public holidays so all the more reason to enjoy the limited annual leave i have (less than 20 days)
I never feel guilty taking *my time* off. I always log off and deal with things when I get back from holiday. People know they can contact me via WA if there’s an emergency but otherwise I’m unavailable. In the last decade I’ve only received *one* WA message when I’ve been on leave - and it wasn’t an emergency (I told them it didn’t qualify as an emergency and could wait). As far as email backlog, I respond first to the last 2 days’ emails and ignore the rest for a week. 95% of the ignored emails I mark as read or delete after that week.
If they choose to wait for you to manage when you're back from vacation, then they choose to wait for you to slowly get through the backlog..... means it's not really urgent.... so no need to feel guilty or feel you have to rush through to reply them. If it were urgent and dire, they would have learnt to figure it out and solve it.... so never feel guilty for going on break. Your leave, your benefit. You matter too. :)
