I used to have a great boss - someone who trusted me, gave me space to do my work, and genuinely supported my growth. But she recently left, and her replacement has a totally different style. My new boss is a micromanager, and it’s been tough. I feel like I’m constantly being second-guessed, and it’s starting to wear me down. Has anyone else been through something like this? How do you deal with a micromanaging boss without burning out or losing confidence?

Short answer: Find another role or company. You won’t be able to change the manager.

I’m going through this now too. It’s time to leave!

Set small boundaries, like giving proactive updates before your boss asks. It gives them peace of mind and gets them off your back for a bit. I also vented a lot (privately), leaned on coworkers, and reminded myself that their style didn’t define my ability. And if it's really not working for you, maybe time to rethink your job.

In some cases a micromanager is that way because they're insecure. If they're new to management it's not uncommon. In some cases you can manage up and just keep them aware of what's happening and try to get them to understand you know what you're doing. It's also good to make sure you document everything. That can help if you're being second-guessed, you can point out that your work is in alignment with expectations.

It would depend how long they’ve been there and how likely I feel they could ease up. Sometimes new bosses have a lot to try to prove it comes out negatively instead of being proactive. Definitely a them issue, but worth a talk about you feeling second guessed but trying to be understanding of where they are coming from too.

I second this. There’s always going to be nuance, but if it’s going to be a dealbreaker, might as well try to communicate before leaving.

I had exactly this, and after months of trying to work it out I unfortunately had to leave the company. It was a shame as it was a really wonderful charity that had such a strong place in my heart, but I could not work with her any longer. Definitely give it time and see if it gets any better, but if not I would suggest looking elsewhere.

Been having trouble moving on since girlfriend ended relationship 3 weeks ago after 2+ years of dating. Before ending it she came over 3 weeks prior to basically give me a chance to work things out and we had a good discussion but then I went back into our routine and didn’t really fight for it or have serious follow up convos that we needed. Now I just have so many regrets that I let her go. I know we still love each other and left on “good” terms but can’t forgive myself for my lack of action.

I had a call with a recruiter at BCG towards the end of last week. I went to check the job description for the role on the careers website and it’s not there anymore. Instead it says, “we’re sorry…the job you are trying to apply for has been filled.” Why would the recruiter reach out to me about applying for this role if they were going to fill it so soon? The role is still listed on LinkedIn but when I click apply it takes me to the BCG careers page with the note saying the role has been filled
