I was about to ask for a raise, but our company just went through a round of layoffs, and now the ground is just shaky. I still think my request is very justified, but for a company that thinks a third of their talent isn't worth paying, I don't know if the point will get through. Would you still go ahead and talk about it or wait it out for six months to a year? Or....not bring it up at all?

I would say don't let the current uncertainty deter you from advocating for yourself. If you feel your request is justified, it might be wise to approach the conversation with sensitivity and timing, but iInstead of waiting six months to a year, consider having the conversation sooner and frame it in a way that highlights your value to the company, and your commitment to help the company grow, Especially during challenging times. Emphasize how your contributions can help stabilize and keep it moving forward.

I would be looking for a new job. You’re likely to get way bigger raise that way.

Politely bring it up, but avoid being seen as forceful. This is a dreadful time to be job hunting. So don’t set yourself up to be a target for termination.

The layoffs aren’t because they don’t think a third of the workforce aren’t worth paying - it’s because their shareholders are expecting the board to deliver “growth” which means in EBITDA, so if gross revenue isn’t growing the way they promised/is expected, then costs have to be cut, hence the layoffs. Western capitalism means placing shareholder value over everything else. Which sucks and makes me a filthy commie for daring to say so.

Anywho, after my attempt to fix that mentality - never stop advocating for yourself. Ever. You want a raise, you want vertical advancement, no one is advocate for you out of the goodness of your heart (unless you work for someone truly awesome, like me) - you need to show that ambition.

Lay out your request, justify it based on your performance above your agreed upon goals/KPIs - and if you get pushback, ask what needs to be true to get the raise you want, specifically what you can do about it and by when.

I would wait. Learn to read the room. I went throught th e same thing. We got a small but fair raise across the board but i waited a year to re-negotiate bc of things like you described. I got the raise. Just had to wait.

You're right that it's not wise to ask for a raise immediately after company layoffs. I would wait at least until the profits of the company increase or you can see an upcoming growth period. It could be 6 months, or it might be one year from now. I hope this helps!

HELP! Company wants me to move to the US for a Remote role - Is this reasonable? Hi, I'm moving through the stages for a Remote US role as a Canadian candidate. They mentioned if I were to be offered, expectation is I'd move to the US. I find this odd as the role is Remote but guess it's legal purposes. Good thing is, this comp also has a Canandian office BUT they said bringing me on through the Canadian office is not smth they do.

Is this reasonable?? How can i best negotiate? Thx!

Clawback clause in current contract: been in role for over 2 yrs, it was an internal move that required relocation. Relocation was approved shortly after (over 2 yrs ago) but covid meant the actual move and start of my contract with new subsidiary was delayed, I was paid by the previous subsidiary meanwhile. I got small relocation package. Would internal move be subject to a buy-out/clawback clause if I leave now and if yes, is it time in role or time under new contract? Any experience? Thanks!
