It’s definitely him asking marketing to update. Has nothing to do with being best or being on partner track
I’ve been at V5 firms for last few years and that is not the practice, the only thing they will automatically update is link to deal announcements and before that at V10, same thing. Not sure if other firms take an initiative to do this, I’ve never heard of this.
Hot take - the only reason mid levels update their firm profile is they’re considering leaving the firm and want to market themselves to prospective employers.
A lot of mid levels realize it’s time to tune up their resume and deal sheet and start putting feelers out for other opportunities. In the course of doing that, they realize that their outward facing firm profile they’ve been neglecting could easily be updated by sending said deal sheet to their secretary. I know this because I’m a 5th year and it’s exactly what I did this week.

I try to keep my online footprint at a minimum. I still think it’s silly that law firms make associates have webpages vs. other professional services (banking, private equity, consulting, etc)

There are just people who value online privacy—full stop.
Anytime this discussion comes up I always bring up banking and consulting to counter the oft parroted (and unfounded) narrative that BL’s approach to online profiles for its lower ranks is a necessity/the only approach in the world of professional services.
You are probably in a very top firm. I think less is more for these firms.
