How do you bill your time? The busier I am the harder it is to bill. How do people actually bill contemporaneously in detailed terms when you bill 12 hours but literally did 100 different things in those 12 hours. And it’s never slow enough to go back and do it super detailed.

Hour here, hour there. I don't worry about that level of detail. Been fine. And before "OMGZ ETHICS" people jump on me, yes, I don't care.

Not typical at all. And I lump entering billing into my hours for all you pearl clutchers.

Start timer in time entry software, do task, write description before turning off timer. Repeat.

I am never perfect, but it has been my only hope.

I work on a million things throughout the day too. I keep a small yellow pad next to me at all times and as I’m going I make notes on what I’m doing when. At the end of the day I transfer to the actual billing software. Might take a few extra steps but it’s the only way I can keep my workflow during the day while making note of what I’m doing when

I honestly don’t know how people have time to bother with timers. My days are more often than not just “buckle up bitch” days where I sit down and it’s just straight intensity for 8-12 hours, no time to be that organized or fiddle with timers. On those days, I take the total # of hours, take 30-60 min off the top for BS (or not, If I truly didn’t even have time to chit chat or eat lunch), then i divy up the time left between the matters I worked on over the course of the day. I look at my sent emails and my calendar to cross-check. If I try to be more exact than that, I would end up massively under billing. The fact that this industry expects me to cram 20 hours of work into a 24 hour day AND keep track of my time in 6 min increments is just laughable. This is the best I can do.

A6 this is my challenge, it can feel so busy, writing a 2 minute email, get interrupted by door knocker for new assignment, and on and on then 30 minutes go by before I switch back to what I was supposed to be working on. Thank you for the input!

At the beginning of the day set up entires for all your open matters. Every time you switch tasks, change the timer. At the end of the day (or the next day) fill in what you did on that matter. Now you don’t have to worry about remembering how much time you spent.

smart

Partner1 thanks that’s how I feel. I’m about to start using more generic language and block bill group it together in more vague language and hope for the best because like… I don’t know what else to do. 😂

like

I use excel and +X amount every time I do something

I use sticky notes and jot the time whenever I switch tasks

Any Atomic Habit readers here? I’m brainstorming identity-based habits for two things I want to change:

Neither of these feel that helpful. Any one have suggestions for other identity-based goals that get at these changes I want to make?

Essentially all I did was note whether certain agreements have change of control provisions, and if so, what the specific language is. I understand what the CoC do, but why am I doing this? Specifically, what does the buyer do with this? It seems like these provisions should trigger but nothing then happens...

I’ve been at a job for a few months and hate it - partners set unrealistic deadlines, micromanage, and create work that truly is not necessary/push urgency when there is no real urgency.
