Likely a junior who hasn’t been sworn into the bar yet. NY can take months to do that even after you pass the bar exam

Person who has graduated law school and likely has taken the bar exam, but has not received their score yet or have not been formally been admitted to the bar, so they can’t hold themselves out as an associate or lawyer. So they get called a law clerk.

Law clerk in private practice here. I'm not barred in the state I currently reside in. I'm doing heavier stuff than a summer associate would, but don't get paid an attorney salary.
So it helps save payroll for the firm a little bit, but it's also a little less stressful for me.
At my old Canadian firm paralegals had the title of law clerk
