I’m sort of in the same boat - my company is extremely political and budget conscious so they won’t promote unless there is work at that level to justify needing someone more senior. If your company is struggling or had a bad year financially in 2023, it could be as simple as budgets.
I also think my manager doesn’t push enough for me, but I think you just need to have the conversation with your manager regularly.
If you’re pressed to stay because you like the company because you really like it - I would just express you want to be promoted by the end of 2024 (or mid year if that’s an option) and ask your boss to help you get there. Try to keep emotions out of the conversation and just make it about your work product.
No thankfully it’s the only time I’ve felt gender may be going against me.
Sorry about your situation. There is a reason why, and your management isn’t telling you about it. Seems like they’re levering your expertise, while either identifying an alternative for you or until you decide you’re not going to continue being undervalued and take the initiative to change. I’d recommend you start to look at opportunities that will better serve you.
Thank you so much for your response. You’re absolutely right, there must be a reason why. I don’t know why he isn’t just explaining it unless of course he just dropped the ball and didn’t push for me. He’s not a strong character in general.
Time to move on
Thank you!
I agree to ask how to set your goals for the promotion and seek clarity on what to get you there from the manager.
