Mine was watching one of our longest tenured employees walk out of the office on his last day. He was older (65ish) and had literally been with the company from day one, well before I'd gotten there. He was the very definition of a workaholic and I doubt he ever really planned to retire until his wife of 40 some years passed away unexpectedly. He took time off for bereavement leave, came back to work for three or four weeks, decided he just couldn't do it anymore and put in his resignation. We threw a small farewell party for him on his last day. A very subdued one, given the circumstances, but it still clearly meant a lot to him. There weren't a lot of dry eyes in the office that day.
That story really hit me. It shows how much even a small farewell can mean when someone has given so much of themselves. Sounds like it was a moment people will never forget.
Our NED is throwing a full day conference as her leaving party 🥳

In my last company a few people held leaving parties which everyone was invited to and it was a great last get together if you get on well with everyone or most people in the company, I find that such a great time.
I agree, those gatherings can feel really special. It’s not about spending loads, just making sure the person knows they mattered to the team.
When a friend of mine left his role, we got him a cake that said "sorry you hated your job" :( it was a joke and he loved it.
That cake idea made me laugh 😂. Sometimes humour is the best way to show people you cared, especially if you know they will take it the right way.
Many, many years ago, I quit a warehouse job because the owners treated us like dirt. I made it VERY clear why I was quitting. One of my coworkers printed off a card of a woman flipping her hair, and it said "I quit this hellhole!" 😂😂 Everyone signed it wish comments like "I wish I was leaving too!" Many of them did end up leaving a few weeks later. It might not have been meaningful in the way you were asking, but it was the most meaningful to me lol.
Wow, that card sounds both hilarious and powerful. Sometimes those little acts of honesty from colleagues speak louder than anything formal management could ever do.
