I went part time earlier this year after having my first baby at the end of 2024 and recently found out that I’ve been passed over for promotion to partner for 2026 (a male colleague who generally offers less as a package is being promoted). I’m really struggling with reconciling (1) my daughter is young and extra time with her is way more important than any job, vs (2) being under appreciated and only receiving mediocre recognition at work. Did the partners in your group not talk to you about what promotion timelines look like when you got PT? In my opinion, it shouldn't be a surprise to not get promoted, someone should have talked about what going part time meant. I think it's (unfortunately) pretty common for timelines to get pushed when women reduce their hours (and sometimes just from leave itself).

Agree with this. My firm’s reduced hours policy expressly says that promotion timelines will be impacted (not just partnership, but progressing to the next year is impacted as well)

Sounds like you need to talk to someone higher up than your local manager and decide how much you do (or don’t) want to sacrifice now. Personally, I sacrificed when my children were really young so that I was a partner by the time they were a little older, but still young. I enjoyed the financial benefit, but more importantly, the autonomy as a partner. I’ve stepped back now because I no longer want the responsibility. I make decent money and still have decent autonomy.

I don’t particularly want to start fresh somewhere new (and I’m not sure I’d be able to keep the part time structure I have now). Just generally looking for thoughts, commiserating with other ladies who want PT after kids and how it impacted your longer term career.

First off, that sucks that this happened to you and nobody was straight with you beforehand so it came as a shock. I'm in a similar situation of 1) new child (my first is 4 months old) such that I value time with her over career advancement at this moment and 2) feeling generally undervalued at work. I tell myself that a career is a long thing and whatever role I have now doesn't have to be perfect or for forever if it allows me to have what I currently want the most (for me that's being fully remote and reasonable hours expectations). So you have to decide what you want the most right now and the best way to get that. And yes it's unfair that men generally don't have to choose or take a career penalty for choosing family time or at least not to the same extent.

For me it kinda sucked getting to this current set up but I feel like things are fine for now and I trust that I can find something else if and when I change my mind or reprioritize things (like trading fully remote for a stronger feeling of collegiality, or pay cut for even better hours). That said I'm 50/50 on applying for new jobs and mostly haven't yet bc it feels like a pain to update my resume or put together cover letters or writing samples.

I was just involved in a Teams meeting where it was announced that leadership is now creating a hybrid model. They clearly stated we will not be returning to the office that we left in 3/2020. This was shocking to me! Earliest back in office now set for Oct. More info to come. I was working from home 2 days a week pre covid, so we'll see what happens. I am in MN.

What are your thoughts about putting an explanation for the current gap (as in, I haven’t been working for several months) on your resume, LinkedIn profile or cover letter? If you think it should be included in one of these places, how would you do it?

I recently had an interview with BNY for an Analyst role located in DE. The interview went well and I was informed by the recruiter that the team was interested. They asked if I was willing to relocate immediately, and I told him that my decision would be best made if I see an offer. I have not yet received a follow up after this(coming on two weeks) so I know that I've been ghosted. My question is, was I wrong to ask to see the offer before making a decision?
