20% if you want to see them again. If you can't afford to tip 20%, then you can't afford $800 balayage to begin with. $800 also seems like an abnormally high amount for balayage (I've paid $350 before tip for balayage in a medium/high cost of living city)
Where in the world do you live ?

If you are getting an $800 hair service, you need to consider the tip as part of the total service cost. If you can’t tip fairly on that service comfortably in your budget, go somewhere else. I have a lot of friends in the service and beauty industries and these people WORK. They also have costs for products, renting the chair, etc. you should also be tipping the person that washes your hair at least $5, if it’s a different person.
I was just wondering. Like why are we paying tips when we are paying for a service already?
The service industry should do better to provide their workers with a good wage, health insurance, and the basics.

If i have to tip for every single "service", then doctors, nurses, cashiers should all be tipped? When will this end?
Their service is the product that you are purchasing. I dont agree with tipping ubers or taxis, unless they help me with my bags. Same with deliverymen
12%-15% is more than acceptable
I do not tip 20% on hair. I also don’t think you need to. Just tip whatever you feel like $10 or $20 based on how good you feel about it
Even if the don’t set their own price, they choose the salon they’re working at, they understand how much they’ll make based on the service. They build their own clientele. It’s obviously very different than the restaurant business
You can afford $800 for hair but can’t afford a tip 🙄. Also you’re being ripped off
I do agree with you. Tipping has gotten nuts
Am I horrible for thinking you shouldn’t tip at all? It’s a service and they set their price. It’s not like they’re a waiter getting paid pennies
But I do agree that they don’t have any other benefits and cost of living and healthcare in the US sucks. So I’ll continue tipping or not availing expensive services 🥹

$800?? I’ve lived in 2 very HCOL cities and balayage is about $350. Are you seeing a celebrity stylist or something?
I get bayalage and gloss in a very high end NYC salon and pay half what she’s paying

If the person that does your hair is the salon owner you do not need to tip. But otherwise at least 15%
But realize that the owner may charge a higher price. My colorist was out sick, I had the owner do my color, she charged me 25% more than my colorist would. I asked the receptionist about it, apparently for anyone she does she charges more because she is the owner and had “more experience”
Where do you live that it’s 800? Mine is usually 400-600ish and I have hair past my boobs
I also do the gloss and the whole shenanigan
