I’m a 3rd year looking to move states/job to be closer to family. I’d need a new job since my firm does not have any work in that state. Recently a fellow lawyer friend was shocked to hear that I just plan to cold apply to positions in that state without networking first. Am I the crazy one for planning to just cold apply without networking?

No, I did that. Had no connections to the state I applied to and still got interviews and offers. I don’t even have family here. I just wanted to work in a bigger city

You’re not crazy at all. As a 3rd year, you are a valuable 'plug-and-play' asset, and firms are always looking for mid-level associates who can actually do the work. Cold applying works fine at your level, but your friend's point is likely about efficiency. A simple coffee chat with a local lawyer can fast-track your resume past the HR filter. Definitely do both!

Negotiating a settlement. I’m at $10k, opposing counsel is at $20k. My client won’t go higher than $15k. OC has come down to 17.5k and says his client won’t budge from that. Do I offer 12.5k so we can hopefully meet in the middle at 15k? Is that how the settlement game is played? Seems dumb we can’t just say let’s meet in the middle now and be done with this.
