I'm a caregiver for a family member and hiding it because I don't want to seem 'distracted.' The double life is exhausting. Why can't we be whole humans at work?

That's just the way it goes in some workplaces, managers really don't care about what happens in our personal lives, and they don't want to hear about it. I don't think there's anything wrong with having people know you're a caregiver for a family member, but if you think it might undermine you at work it's probably best not to draw attention to it. I can see it being exhausting.

Yeah, exactly. It’s sad how common that is, sometimes it feels like empathy just doesn’t exist in some workplaces.

It's so tough, I feel for you - you must be exhausted. Best of luck to you through this!

Thanks, I really appreciate that! It’s definitely been a lot lately.

I'm so sorry. I hate that I think you're probably right for hiding this. If you give them any excuse, no matter how valid, you know there's always a chance they'll fire you for it. It's just the way it is - companies want robots, not human beings with human feelings and human needs. I hope you and the family member are doing as okay as can be, all things considered. As exhausted as I'm sure you must be, I hope you can take solace knowing you're a good person and you're doing the right thing. They're lucky to have you.

Yeah, sadly that’s just how it is nowadays. Thanks for the kind words though, it really means a lot.

Because you are asking the work place to support you emotionally, and that is too much brain on their own resources. You were hired to do a job, your personal life bus your own responsibility...

True, but sometimes a little empathy goes a long way, people aren’t robots, and life outside work can still affect how we show up.

That must be really hard. But if you are doing it you must be brave enough to continue.

Yeah, it definitely gets tough sometimes, but I’m just taking it one day at a time.

Who are you hiding it from? Your employer? Is there a policy from not being able to work with family members?

Yeah, mainly my employer. There’s no policy against it, but I just don’t want it to become a thing at work.

I have been a caregiver often on since I was eight years old for neighbors. Also, now for my mother and father, my family members manipulated me into a marriage for financial assistance in a place to live for them. My mother got sick. My marriage was falling apart. I had a good job at a communities service board unknowingly my husband was complaining to them about me and claiming mental illness. My father followed me to work when I got caregiver syndrome and try too hard to help somebody. My father never finishes what he says he will do due to caregiver syndrome consistently slip in and out of be believing the people in my life will take care of me as I care for them unfortunately, that is not true as when my mom got sick with a stroke I immediately got her to the hospital safely. I recognize the signs. My mother and father both knew we had diabetes in our family, but when I had an attack, my sister insured that the cops were called after I was attacked by my mother. I had lost my good standing in the community my best friend and pretty much every person in my life, other than familyI no longer trust them and I’m struggling to get out of the financial abuse that this has caused. Also working in and out of nursing homes. I have had my phone hacked by family members. Don’t trust most my family. And I no longer trust companies or the government due to the husband being cop . Trump being our president. Praying to one day make enough money to find a place to live with my dogs away from people. However, with poor education still. Don’t think I would ever make enough to actually care for myself, so I find myself at the age with no children the inability to have them due to neglect by my parents. To ensure they have care while I have none, I pray companies move more into housing, employees and paying fair wages. Oh and by the way, I’m white. From the northeast staying near our countries capital.
