If you’re trying to jump from staff to manager, I’d say it’s not gender but lack of experience. Not sure why you would feel you’re more qualified skipping senior/ supervision role right to manager
I don't think it's gender based at all. There are a number of technical and soft skills that go into the manager role, especially when it has the potential to lead to a partner role. I would say get feedback on what they were looking for and go through the natural senior, supervisor, and then manager progression. You also did not say if you had a CPA or not, which usually limits your ability to become a manager, especially in public accounting. I am currently an audit manager, and I need to have top-notch technical skills since I act as the quasi QC reviewer and pseudo peer reviewer since it is a peer review year. I also am expected to network and bring in business when possible. I hire, train, and have been known to teach a CPE here and there. I am partner track and also have a background in tax, law, IT, and CAS, which has helped me climb the ladder faster than most.
Isn't there a senior role at your firm that would fall between staff and manager?
Respectfully, how are you so sure that you’re more qualified? You said you are a staff. At many firms, staff spend 2-3 years in their role learning before being promoted to senior and then go through 3 years of reviewing and managing teams as a senior so that they are prepared to become a manager. Why did you think you could skip that?
