I’m currently on leave from a toxic group with abusive partners. My original plan was to stay at my current firm just long enough to take maternity leave, then move on after.
But while on leave, I started job searching just to see what was out there and close to receiving offers from two firms. I also just learned two days ago that I’m 5 weeks pregnant
Now I’m torn: stick with the original plan and take the mat leave I’ve earned, or start fresh in a better environment?

Stick to the plan.

I hated my old firm. I job hunted until I was showing (because you can always negotiate), but ended up riding it out and job hunted while on leave and eventually shortly after.

6 months after I came back from leave, I finally landed a nice in-house role.

I'm not making huge money, but I'm much happier. I'm not stressed. I'm not hunting for work to fill my hours. Efficiency is rewarded.

The grass is greener.

I should also add that at my company, mat leave is given when you start with the company. None of this be there for a year garbage. So don't lock yourself out of keeping your eyes open for new opportunities.

I would disclose your pregnancy AFTER receiving your offer and negotiate for them to provide you with the firm’s paid maternity leave as part of your offer to join the firm (even if you otherwise wouldn’t qualify under the policy). I did this and it worked great! I told them I truthfully wasn’t pregnant when I applied but have since learned that I am pregnant- they understood. Don’t underestimate the value that you will bring in the months leading up to your leave- I billed great hours and made a lot of professional progress before going on leave. If they like you and actually want you to join them, they will happily offer you the leave. Plus you will be happier in your new role!!

Agreed

I don’t know how long your current leave extends, but I will say toughing it out until next summer returning to a group that made you that miserable while going through the throes of pregnancy sounds very miserable to me. I’d hear out these other offers and ask about maternity leave benefits without necessarily disclosing your pregnancy. If you could be eligible for at least some paid leave before being there for a year, I’d jump ship.

Stick with the original plan!

How long is the current leave? So you’re going to finish out current leave, go back, work until birth, then take mat leave?

Hmm… I’m gonna go against what everyone else is saying and say I think you should at least see what the offers are. Maybe you can negotiate a nice mat leave at a new firm.

I’m on medical leave based on how bad it got and how it triggered my depression and anxiety!

If you're in a situation that is bad enough that you have to take mental health leave, you cannot stay even if you're pregnant. Take the new job offer and negotiate your maternity leave. Do you really think you'll last 8 more months at your current job??

Things are different when you’re pregnant though… the stress on you may be detrimental to baby (i.e., could cause baby to come early as what happened with me). Just something to keep in mind/consider.

Definitely stick to the original plan. Just out of curiosity, what is the current leave related to?
