I’m going to be teaching a self contained special education class next year. In my 27yrs of teaching, I’ve never encountered anything like this. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Do some cursory research in music therapy and understand the difference between music therapy and music education. Bruscia’s book DEFINING MUSIC THERAPY is excellent. Music Educators who work in special ed exist on the on the border between Music Education and Music Therapy. You are still responsible for music skills, but have to account for the student disabilities and make accomodations for the students to meet the academic goals in music education. Those accomodations will heavily depend on what population you will be working with. Special Education covers a giant umbrella of any and all disabilities that interfere with a student’s ability to succeed in the mainstream classroom.
