I feel like I’m seeing more students than ever who struggle with basic skills, and it’s not for lack of effort on our part. I think a lot about how reading habits have changed, how screen time affects focus, and how many kids are coming to school without strong early literacy experiences. The challenge isn’t just teaching better, it’s figuring out how to teach differently.

. ..and so many of the students don't want to learn anything? They seem satisfied with not being able to read or do basic math.
It starts in early childhood- the basic foundation skills are not being mastered because kids are not making connections and building background knowledge. They are delayed in verbal language skills because no one talks with them. The iPad babysitter does not help kids learn to think, solve problems, or be creative. It takes away children’s ability to manage emotions and socialize appropriately. Brain development is delayed because of the experiences these kids are NOT having. Every area is impacted- gross motor skills are weak because kids aren’t moving and challenging their bodies. Fine motor skills are impacted because of lack of opportunities to develop skills. Reading is impacted- everything is a video. Mathematical problem solving is impacted- no opportunities to make connections to counting, sorting, shapes, building, and puzzles. Little kids can’t even sit at a table to eat because they graze all day and lack the muscle control to sit upright in chairs and use utensils to eat. The parenting culture of making everything easy for themselves has really caused a lot of problems with behavior, learning, and overall functioning. It is so scary!

It is scary. I see my friends' grandchildren burning through hours of YouTube shows, and tiktok reels. The parents will just hand them a phone or tablet when they start getting loud or rowdy.
Chat gpt- nobody reads

Exactly. This is so true. I watched a student type a prompt in the ChatGPT, wait for the response, copied, and pasted the answer into his discussion question for the week. He was shocked when he realized I was watching him. I mean his prompt was as long as the expected word count for my 6th Graders. He could have just answered the question himself. When I explain it to him, he said, "wow, i didn't think about it that way" 🤔
I would check to see if they were behind in the previous grades, how is there attendance? Our district got where they did not retrain anyone.
Now they are providing extra tutoring and sending them to sylvan learning that we have in town now.
My last year of teaching I only requested that they read 20 min a night. 1/4 of my kids would read if parents were involved.
Pennsylvania Middle School 1, as a recent lower primary teacher myself I agree! I do sub now too so see children not being held accountable for quality work and way too much time doing lessons on a computer rather than the teacher directly teaching and taking the time to check for understanding. If expectations for academics and behavior were upheld with support from administrators kids would learn to think and learn core content to function better in society.
Apathy, Attitude, and they have norophobia.
