Define “smaller market”. Are you talking about just not the two coasts? Or are you talking about 4th tier cities? Are you also talking about mainly regional accounts?
Good question. Sorry. I should’ve elaborated. Not a big city like a NY, Chicago, LA or Detroit. Portland is a contender but looks like it’s getting bigger and doing more design and social work (as I fear most of the industry is doing these days). But any places like a Boulder or Santa Fe, a Charlotte or Portland, Maine. The kinds of places where you can do good work on the accounts you have (which in those markets I realize may admittedly be regional or even local) and have a good quality of life. It’s not so much about the size of the client as it is what the agency was able to do with them.

Austin and Dallas (maybe Dallas is too big?) have decent work coming out of several agencies. Austin has GSD&M, Preacher, McGarrah-Jessee, and some other network ones. There’s Kansas and VML, Barkley, etc.
I’m in Minneapolis. Several agencies here as well. City is not so small, but it’s not huge either. There’s Fallon, Carmichael Lynch, Colle McVoy, Mono, Periscope, a few network shops and a ton of smaller indie ones.
