I use background noise to help keep that part of my brain occupied. So I’ll listen to podcasts, background TV, whatever.
When that isn’t possible, agree with other suggestions to use timers. I’ll also use a scratch pad to write down random thoughts/tasks so I can let them go as they pop up.
Truly a perfect analogy for so many ADHD things. I feel like I’m generally motivated and want to do things but constantly negotiating with some part of myself to allow me to be productive.
Dump pad. Dump those thoughts on a note bad to go back to later. Don’t worry about order or organizing. Just dump it for later.
If you don’t write quickly or are more of a “think out loud” type, I’ve found dictating snippets of things into my phone & emailing it to myself helps a lot… some of those snippets have been GOLD that I otherwise would’ve forgotten 😂
I try to work on paper and away from my computer as much as possible. Seeing e-mail and Slack/Teams/Zoom notifications spikes my anxiety and causes huge distractions.
If it's just me and some papers, I can focus better, digest the content better, and draft at least a solid outline of what I want to accomplish when I go back to the computer to type it up.
