Disagree. This is just one end of the spectrum lol. On the other hand, if you don’t make any connections at all, you won’t have decent references and you won’t have a strong network.
Personally, I don’t make friends with everyone at work but I also know there are some real ones out there who are genuine people and those are the ones I make friends with. Some of the friends I made at my previous job over 6 years ago, I still keep in touch with today. And if they wanted a new job, they could absolutely use me as reference.
The trick is not to shut people out like this guy is implying lol. If you do that, you won’t get anywhere in life. The trick is to KNOW who your friends are and keep those people close. Connect with the ones that are truly good people and willing and able to help you grow in your career. Of course, one should always practice good judgment and be careful with whom they choose to befriend. But in the end, there is a way to successfully make friends at work without it hurting you.
I disagree too. You spend a good amount of time at work. If you don't make friends at work, you will be lonely. Just because one person betrayed your trust and friendship, doesn't mean the next person will do the same. Don't carry the trauma around with you. Life offers enough obstacles.

I agree that you need to have some friends at work. It is the only way to build a LinkedIn network and also have someone that you can use as a reference.
I have been in the work force for many years and still keep in touch with work friends from over 20 years ago.
@Director of Compliance - I agree that it could be lonely at work if you don't have any friends. Even if you don't socialize after work it is still important and necessary to have some friends.
